About The Artwork

This piece is inspired by the earliest tellings of Little REd Riding Hood. The tale was first a popular oral tale told among aristocratic house wives, to entertain themselves. Charles Perrault was the first to put the story to paper, titling it "The Story of Grandmother," turning it into a cautionary tale for children; warning them of the dangers of crossing paths with a stranger. The original tale is probably much more inappropriate than the versions you may recall. Not only does Red get tricked by the wolf, but is also tricked into eating her grandmother's organs, drinking her bleed, and removing her clothes to get into bed with wolf. It also features a cat who warns her that 'a slut is she who eats the flesh and drinks the blood of her grandmother." As you can now tell, this story has undergone an incredible amount of evolution. I think it is important to keep sharing and re-telling these stories as we see fit, because they are often a reflection of society and pieces of history, no matter what the context.
