Since a couple of months I am working on a Niki de Saint Phalle self-portrait for my icon portrait series. I admire the woman and the artist in her. To me and to my artistic work she is one of the most inspiring women artists of the 20th century. I could create dozens of Niki de Saint Phalle self-portraits. This artistic incarnation has become a real obsession to me. Niki is sharing my days and my nights.
This painting is inspired by Nikis shooting paintings and her love for roundings. As artwork title I have chosen an excerpt from her following quote: "I love the round, the curves, the undulation, the world is round, the world is a breast. For Niki "La rondeur"(roundness) has been a feminine form. By contrast, corners and angles are masculine.

This painting is part of my series "Being Marilyn Monroe. Icon Portraits.", a series of self-portraits reflecting and expressing my admiration for and my identification with inspiring modern day icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Frida Kahlo, Audrey Hepburn, Maria Callas, Romy Schneider, Michael Jackson, Grace Kelly and Niki de Saint Phalle.
My icon self-portrait series is influenced by the work of surrealist female artists like Frida Kahlo and Niki de Saint Phalle as well as by Italian author Luigi Pirandello's post-modernist approach on identity theory. And it is based on a series of coincidences, that brought me to explore and re-think the inherent nature of portraying providing a practical meaning to the American poet William Carlos Williams' quote: «The artist is always and forever painting only one thing: a self-portrait».
