This painting is inspired by an codex if you will, for medical field surgery during war time that began in the 13th century. This particular figure was drawn from the index in a book by the German surgeon Hans Von Gersdorff in 1517 called, 'Feldbuch der Wundarznei' (Fieldbook of Surgery). I was intrigued by the image as there is a direct correlation to St. Sebastian, almost uncanny. I had been immediately compelled to paint it, however as though it were Saint Sebastian, but drawing from Von Gersdoff's image. That may explain the golden weaponry and the massive phallus. Not to mention the absent face, as if to raise the question, who is it really? The Wounded Man or Saint Sebastian?
