ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting is Sold. This painting is about the Modern art museum of Amsterdam, it took a generation to restore and rebuilt it. The painting is made with oilpaint and pigments on linen. The hats are embroidered with fine silver thread. In my visual work, I am fascinated by the human in motion – my reflection of contemporary reality.
I work in concepts; a clear idea is the essential foundation of my work. I will often work with a concept for a period of many years, during which other nuances constantly emerge. My desire is always to go deeper than the visual image, the surface. My goal is to make the underlying more visible, and this goal places great importance on material used: Making my own paint from original pigments can surprise with deep and vibrant tones. The carrier is sometimes transparent. This creates depth, resulting in shadows. I often work with textile additions such as patchwork, embroidery, holes and stitching. I developed a fascination for textiles and ways of working with them as a fashion designer with Ollily and as a concept designer at Mexx before I became a visual artist. The great metropolitan area of Amsterdam is the main source of my inspiration and my paintings often have a hidden social message. I want my work to be a source of discovery where the viewer is increasingly finding more aspects that reveal themselves to him or her.

The paintings often have a subliminal contemporary social message.
Several aspects can reveal themselves to the spectator. It began with the completion of the fashion Academy in Amsterdam and designing for well-known clothing brands like Oilily and Mexx. However her passion for painting and making objects made sure that Hester is now an established visual artist. She was selected for the master class of the well-known German artist Jorg Immendorff. Hester works in concepts, with a clear idea, the human in motion. She also wants to make the importance of the used material visible, such as with the transparent paintings in layers. Her paintings are regularly exhibited and also collected abroad; Her work regularly gets a central place at this artsite It is possible to visit her studio in Amsterdam, on appointment. THE ARTIST ABOUT HER WORK "In my paintings I am fascinated by the human in motion. I often work for years with a concept; in wich new nuances arise. The role of the material used is also important: -My favourite carrier is transparent. It creates an effect of fragility, depth and shadows. -I like to use textile additions like patchwork, holes, cuts and sutures, embroidery, or mother of Pearl buttons. -The use of pigments. By making paint with pigments, the tone can be surprisingly deeper, more shiny or matt. As I was a fashion designer before being a contemporay artist, many of my paintings have traces of fashion and textile additions ".
