“There flashed upward a glow and a glare” is the caption for an illustration by Harry Clarke for the 1933 edition of Edgar Allan Poe's "Tales of Mystery and Imagination.” Although the original is in black and white the caption led me to create a flaming red fiery glow with flames shooting from a blue-black ground… painted with gesso and acrylics on a large 150 x 100 cm sheet of Fabriano paper which, being large, moderately heavy with paint and slightly wavy, should be (dry) mounted on a board as part of the framing.

Abstract artist... stock photographer... writer... plant-based... fixie-cyclist... minimalist... and easy going, I studied Interior Design at art college in the 1960s, then worked in the TV and film industry for more than a decade, before turning to photography full-time. Later I published and edited specialist photographic magazines on darkroom techniques for several years and continue to supply digital images to the world's largest photo agency from my current location here in France. However, in a hard working retirement I spend much more time and energy as an abstract fine artist working with all media from old-fashioned paper, pencil and paint to creative collage and canvas.
