Painting, Oil on Wood
Size: 39.3 W x 27.3 H x 0.8 D in
Ships in a Crate
This work relates to the threat of displacement that rural Africans face in conflict zones, hence the color and spatial choices that have been made. The birds obviously signify natural freedoms and the thicket signifies being snagged in an uncompromising situation. An attempt is made to represent the stoical resilience of the womenfolk. The painting has been done on a weathered piece of ¾ inch plywood that is warped, jagged and scarred. The scars, holes and roughness of the surface are allowed to show through the brushwork so as to bind the subject matter to the surface. The wood was soaked in genuine turpentine to preserve it. The back and sides have been sprayed with raw linseed oil mixed with black oxide to give a black color and to seal the wood. It would be difficult to frame this piece due to its irregular shape, and this would be counter to the raw spirit of the piece. Currently in stock at an art gallery
