About The Artwork

"Thin Section 11 (coal in the canary mine)" 14.5 x 10.7" watercolor and ink on paper 2013 Blake Brasher This is the eleventh installment of the Thin Sections series of paintings I began working on in the late summer/early fall of 2013. It is something of an evolution of the Entanglement Series; the tangled lines have been pushed into the background and blurred and the focus is much more on fields of color. The Thin Section series takes its name from the way a mineral is prepared to be viewed under a microscope. By taking a very thin slice out of an ordinary rock and examining it under extreme magnification the sample reveals hidden complexities and beauty. I think of these “thin sections” not as samples of rocks, but of experiences or ideas. The subtitles are simply suggestions and not meant to be literal, they are more like my personal free association with the image. "Thin Section 11" is painted with watercolor and ink on paper. Some of the inks have an iridescent quality to them that doesn't quite come through in the photograph. Many of the fractal like geometries are achieved by applying ink to the paper directly with the dropper while the watercolor is still drying. This pulls the ink into the watercolor and creates patterns not unlike mountain streams seen from far above. This painting is framed in a Blick Essentials natural wood frame with archival plexiglass front and a bright white archival mat. It was part of a show at the JP Art Market in Jamaica Plain, MA that ran from October 3 - November 3, 2013.
