About The Artwork
This painting started off as picture of a friend's lover but we has a disagreement and I had to get someone close to stand in. A friend lent me her well appointed studio which gave me the background and so I continued. My model was going through a thin period, having been ill, and it gave me a sense of mortality so I added the skull and wineglass in the background as an allusion to the vanitas genre of still life paintings of the Baroque period.

I am a self taught artist who has has not had any tuition and so I am as free as anyone can be to do as I please, with no superimposed ideas of what being 'creative" is. I have always drawn and painted figuratively, sometimes varying my style to let the medium speak, but always following the same path. My aim is to express the gentle shock of otherness and the strange life of people and things. I am influenced by my upbringing in a coastal town, my experience of disability, and by the figurative tradition from Caravaggio through Vermeer to Spencer and Freud.
