After years of controlled rendering, periodically I would attempt to create nonrepresentational paintings. I always liked and admired 20th century abstract Expressionists. By doing commercial set painting while living in New York, and having to cover large areas in very short time frames, I learned how to use paint in an efficient manner to achieve certain effects. This opened me up to understanding the medium in a whole different way. Instead of controlling the outcome by drawing and imposing an image, now I experiment with control and lack of control, asymmetry, chance, scale and design. Drawing is in there, but sometimes with space between the brush and the surface.
