Tidal Painting

In this work, line, color, and form combine into an expression of landscape as an experience of movement and color, and a balance between the dualities of warm vs cool, angular vs fluid, flat vs dimensional, and calm vs vital. I begin each piece with an intuitive drawing of overlapping lines that slice from one side of the composition to the other, animating a central body of interlocking shapes whose curves reference simplistic clouds, hills or ocean waves. These shapes are filled with color spontaneously at first, followed by harmonies in contrasting values of warm and cool tones. Gradients reference generalized light and shadow, implying dimension and atmosphere. Sharp angles and straight lines act as counterpoints to the predominate flowing undulations of the rest of the composition, suggesting the presence of the man-made. Areas of thick textural brush strokes contribute to the overall movement of the work while also creating tactile, tangible dimension that lends a sculptural quality. In the end, a final composition emerges that is a balance between the nonobjective and the representational. A title is not chosen until the work is complete, and therefore does not act as a guiding force in illustrating a particular idea, providing only one possible interpretation of the imagery presented. The focus of the work is not on the ‘what,’ after all, but on the experience of color, line, and form that coalesce into an expression of nature and of being that is balanced and harmonious, despite the dynamic forces imposed upon it.
