Contact: info@davidemagris.com Statement My works are the simple reflection of my personality and the way I perceive and approach reality. There are 3 main recurring themes in my paintings. The first one is the cohabitation of contrasts like rationality and irrationality, order and disorder, appearance and essence, prison and freedom. This theme is the expression of my constant need to experience contrasts in order to form my personal perception of the reality; my inability to categorize myself in a specific group or to find happiness and satisfaction with a single experience or group of people. In most of these works there is an attempt to reconcile creativity and irrationality with order and rationality as I believe that we could benefit from a better balance between these two concepts which are complementary, not antithetic. Indeed the foundation of rationality is irrational as there is no definitive answer on the reason of our existence and of everything that surrounds us. This latest concept is related to the second main theme which is more existentialist and reflect my attraction to space and the Universe; and my amusement in the paradox of our reality. I always found interesting to think about the non sense of our existence when we look to ourself from a bigger prospective - the Universe. Nevertheless it doesn't bother me or affects my rational, day to day living - paradoxically it give me more confidence and prospective in what I do. Somehow it gives me optimism and a bit of healthy lightness which helps to find more easily satisfaction. Some works are also influenced by theoretical physic concepts (from string theory, relativity, and quantum physic) which I found really interesting as they are often counter-intuitive and, in a sense, irrational as unaccepted by the constraints of a normal rational mind. This proves again to me the promiscuity of rationality and irrationality. The last theme is a sort of slideshow of moments, experiences and feelings that I lived in the last 6 years since I moved to London. From my prospective the canvas itself becomes as an old picture in the sense that it brings back to me a specific situation, feeling or moment from the past. Often I prefer to not title these paintings as I am curious to see what other people see in one of my "old pictures". About I might be considered an outsider by the artistic community as I don't have an educational background in Art or ever followed a painting class.
