To Fall Painting

'To Fall' is part of a body of work which depicts a post-apocalyptic worldview which combines humanities fading presence with elements from nature to question how long man will live in respect to deep time. The piece asks if we are in a period of time where man has caused long-term damage to the Earth, what could the next epoch of time look like if it was a world beyond man? I also wanted to comment on the culpability of our actions against the environment for humans now and humans to come as more than ever we are at a time in history where we are able to glimpse into the future and understand the impact of our actions. The three paintings which make up the triptych depict a desolate environment illuminated by a mysterious light, an object falling from a dark sky and an impact site on a dark world. To create the triptych I layered different colours of egg tempera onto gesso primed boards and used sand paper and engraving tools to draw into the surface, creating fine detail and loose abstract marks which reveal the different layers of egg tempera. This process is an unusual mix of spontaneous mark making and considered detail.
