About The Artwork

Please note: this is an art reproduction of the original acrylic painting on dibond. Toucans have always been one of my favourite animals - the colours are stunning and the beak is so powerful-looking! It gives the bird a regal quality. The full-moon frames the toucan beautifully.I love creating nighttime scenes and I think the two go well together. Toucans are usually pictured in colourful rainforests - but this one's ventured out into the night, creating a peaceful scene. I chose to work in acrylic paint because it dries faster than oils. You can also add water to acrylic if it starts drying on the palette and you can create different levels of transparency by adding glazing medium. This is useful for enhancing depth and is a technique applied to photorealistic painting. For Never Seen, I drew a grid on the dibond first to help ensure accuracy and that the drawing would be centred correctly. I then painted every area using a flat colour of that area. For example, I used one shade of red for a red area – although that area would eventually have several shades of red to create detail later on. I used various brushes starting with a larger one to cover large areas, and reducing the brush size as I approached finer detailed areas. A mahl stick came in useful so I could avoid leaning on the actual artwork. The background was originally green but I realised it took too much precedence so I changed it to the blue you see now. The finished painting was then sprayed with a matt varnish to help retain its natural appearance. I hope this artwork brings a peaceful feeling to your room - whether you choose to hang it in your bedroom, dining room, lounge, or any room you want to experience a sense of peace in. Medium: Matt Smooth - Hahnemuhle Fine Art Bamboo 290gsm Includes 2.5cm border around print. Certificate of Authenticity included. Depending on your monitor settings colors may appear slightly different on screen than on the actual print. Photos may not represent scale accurately. Mounts and frames are not included. These fine art Giclee prints are made using archival pigment inks for long life. This type of printing provides one of the highest degrees of accuracy and richness of colour available throughout all reproduction techniques. Printed using a Fine Art Trade Guild Accredited Printer. Available sizes (Please see other listings for other sizes) 40.4cm wide x 50cm high (15.9 x 19.6 inches) - Limited edition of 10 20.4cm wide x 25cm high (8.0 x 9.8 inches) - Limited edition of 75 15cm wide x 17.5cm high (5.9 x 6.8 inches) - Limited edition of 100 When you receive your fine art print in the post, it will be rolled. To show the print off to its full potential, I recommend having the print mounted on a white or pale complementary coloured mount board and a tasteful frame. Mounting artwork gives it ‘breathing space’ so the frame doesn’t sit too close to the print. Your local frame shop will be able to help you choose and advise you on coloured mounts and frames.

A passion for drawing My name is Helen and I'm the creator of this artwork. I'm exposing my life-long passion for drawing to the outside world by selling limited edition prints of my artwork on Saatchi Art.I now draw, paint, and sometimes write and illustrate my own stories. I was born in Harlow in the UK and raised in Hertfordshire until 11, when I moved to Exeter then Barnstaple in Devon. I now live in the beautiful county of Hampshire with my husband and cat, Gizmo. I'm a full-time copywriter at a healthcare insurance company which fortunately allows for a degree of creativity. I come from artistic parents and my father Roger Withington is the former banknote designer at the Bank of England. You may be familiar with 'Series 'E' which includes banknotes which feature Charles Dickens, George Stevenson, Michael Faraday, Sir John Houblon, and Edward Elgar. You can see his work on display at the Bank of England Museum just off Threadneedle Street in London. My work is often inspired by travel, people, books, and photos I take which I use as reference for my art and often upload them onto Shutterstock. I enjoy focussing on themes like London, animals, people and night-time - which I think is the most interesting setting for my paintings. Shadows come to life and moonlight creates a peaceful feeling. Other major themes: Night, the moon, toucans, old London buildings, houses, people, nature, summer, travel, fictional stories, historical buildings – e.g. Victorian and Tudor, mysterious buildings, colourful, bold contrasts, pencil tone, animals, detail, convincing drawing, realism, out of the ordinary. Process: My process begins with an idea. It could be the shape of something, the colour or the contrast that inspires me to want to draw it. I might do a super quick sketch of it first to get the layout and colours right. Usually, I can’t wait to get stuck into the final piece while the inspiration’s fresh! I gather any reference which I need so I can get the details right. I like accuracy – it makes the artwork more convincing. I stick my reference to my drawing board so I can see it easily. I usually draw outlines in pencil, rubbing out any unnecessary marks with a putty rubber. Sometimes I draw out a grid if I want to scale up or down and position things accurately. Some things, like faces, are easier to draw freehand though I find, so I can feel my way to getting the likeness right.
