Toucan 'Never seen' - Limited Edition 2 of 10 Painting

Toucans have always been one of my favourite animals - the colours are stunning and the beak is so powerful-looking! It gives the bird a regal quality. The full-moon frames the toucan beautifully.I love creating nighttime scenes and I think the two go well together. Toucans are usually pictured in colourful rainforests - but this one's ventured out into the night, creating a peaceful scene. I chose to work in acrylic paint because it dries faster than oils. You can also add water to acrylic if it starts drying on the palette and you can create different levels of transparency by adding glazing medium. This is useful for enhancing depth and is a technique applied to photorealistic painting. For Never Seen, I drew a grid on the dibond first to help ensure accuracy and that the drawing would be centred correctly. I then painted every area using a flat colour of that area. For example, I used one shade of red for a red area – although that area would eventually have several shades of red to create detail later on. I used various brushes starting with a larger one to cover large areas, and reducing the brush size as I approached finer detailed areas. A mahl stick came in useful so I could avoid leaning on the actual artwork. The background was originally green but I realised it took too much precedence so I changed it to the blue you see now. The finished painting was then sprayed with a matt varnish to help retain its natural appearance.
