About The Artwork

"Tree of Knowledge" is an acrylic painting that comes from a day dream and vision that I had while meditating. The painting is realistic, impressionistic and surreal, containing bold, rich vibrant colours and hues, and a good balance of warm and cool colours, to achieve a delicate balance between calm/still elements and chaotic/moving elements (i.e. the blazing fire in the background). The concept of the painting is our human dependence upon information and technology, computers and 'digital reality', which can detract and distract us from living in the real, tangible world. With the onset of Virtual reality and augmented reality, and the predominant use of technology in the workplace, schools, home and every facet of our lives, I find that society, and by virtue the family dynamic has changed drastically, as has our relationship with each other and with the natural and man-made world. Our continued reliance upon technology and specifically computers, games, and the 'artificial' forms of reality, as opposed to the elements of the natural and urban world, is causing people to be detached from each other and disconnected from the forces of nature, especially natural disasters caused by climate change. The painting also explores the theme of information overload and sensory overload. The apple laptop computers that the people are viewing is entertaining and provides temporary pleasure and happiness, all the while, the real world issues that they must face are raging around them, demanding their attention. The mountain of books that the youth are sitting on represents past knowledge and the importance of learning from the past; meanwhile the computers that they are immersed in, becomes their new reality and source of information. Issues of literacy and the decline of literacy in our modern information age is also explored.

ARTIST STATEMENT My experience as an artist started at the age of six with cartoon characters and comic books. The notion of heroism created a strong drive in me to make the world a better place. After completing a Bachelor and Masters degree in Environmental Studies from York University, I worked as a visual art instructor, environmental policy and conservation specialist, and youth facilitator; which led me to create environmentally themed artwork in 2006, which I showed at the York University Eco-Art Media Festivals. Since 2007, I have used visual art as a medium to educate and inform children and teens at primary and secondary schools in Toronto and the GTAH. Similarly I have made hundreds of presentations and given workshops on use of non-toxic, biodegradable materials and eco-art processes, in the use of art that inspires people to want to contribute to environmental sustainability in Canada. My strong arts foundation from McMaster University, Sheridan College and Max the Mutt, informed my "environmental art" which helps people learn about the ecological crisis and potential solutions. I studied 3D Animation at Seneca College, with the intention of making animated shorts that explore the narrative behind climate change, species at risk and habitat loss. I am an also an art instructor at the Varley Art Gallery and the Meta4 Gallery. I teach painting, drawing, graphic novels, animation and mixed media to children, youth and adults.
