About The Artwork
This lovely little painting came about by accident. I was trying out some new techniques which, frankly, did not work very well. Rather than scraping the canvas and starting fresh, I chose to experiment with pulling and scumbling with the paint already there. The tree shapes I had originally painted vanished, but the sense of them stayed. It felt like the glimpses of colour and light sometimes seen in the winter. From there, I refined the bits that needed it and left the rest. Because this was originally intended as a test-piece, the sides and about 1 cm of the edge of the front of the canvas were covered with tape, creating a white "frame."

After making very little art for nearly 25 years, Marquita was introduced to live competitive painting in 2016 which rekindled her passion for expressing herself visually. Since then, she has competed 15 times in four cities in two provinces. Fascinated with patterns of light and colour, her work is heavily influenced by impressionist styles and organic abstractions found in nature, including reflections in water, tree shapes, the changing sky and interesting faces. She primarily works in acrylic paint, soft pastels, mixed media, and has begun experimenting with digital media. Marquita is self-represented and takes commissions on a limited basis.
