About The Artwork

This picture came about from a cold and dark January. My wife had just bought some tulips to brighten her day and as the days passed they started to fade, but they inspired me to paint them, so I went and bought another two bunches. £2.50 a bunch seemed so cheap in comparison to the way they raise your spirit's and bring joy. So I gave one bunch to Romina and the other I put in a little white ewer and took to the studio, placing them on the table while I sorted through my painting gear. I looked up and noticed them against a cast I have in the studio of the horses head from the Elgin marbles (or Parthenon). And the composition seemed to work. I just added the newspaper and then began to paint.

I'm primarily an oil painter and a draughtsman. I nearly always work on location, but if a scene really takes me in some way I will work on several studies and then make a larger picture in the studio. I follow a tradition of plein air or impressionistic painting. But in it's simplest terms, I love the thrill of capturing my subject from the fact. Over the years I have dedicated ever more time to painting. I think it has taken me time to become a painter, no short cuts, just plodding away, developing a visual language that is an honest representation of the way I see the world. I believe painting is a journey in one's life. I'm a great fan of Edward Hopper who made some very profound quotes on art, but one that resonates with me more than any other was his view that '(great) art is the outward expression of the inner life of the artist. And this inner life will result in his personal vision of the world.'
