About The Artwork

These paintings are meant to hang freely, unstretched and unframed. Canvas curves and flexes organically, it does not always lay flat. The canvas is tacked to a wood brace using small brass tacks (aptly so, since these pieces are all about getting down to the essential materials). The wood brace can be hung easily on a wall with pre-attached hardware and simple nails. The Mexican Blanket collection is, in part, a continuation of my Color Block series. One central paint color is accented by embroidered elements stitched in complementary and contrasting colors that play off of each other and the painted background, bouncing light and color to the eye. In other pieces, embroidery is used alone to create graphic patterns as a kind of modern folk art. Inspired by a pure love of vibrant color and a growing obsession with Mexican art and design. Named for the 1970s family heirloom that keeps me cozy in my studio. Unstretched, unprimed canvas is a physical element of each piece, rather than just a support, making these works both painting on canvas and embroidery on fabric, blending fine art with folk art.

Emily Keating Snyder is a Los Angeles artist working in abstract painting and minimalist embroidery. Her work brings craft into the context of fine art by literally stitching thread into artist’s canvas. Each piece balances rigidity with looseness, as spontaneous brushstrokes come together with intentional embroidered lines. Emily graduated from New York University in 2009. Her art has been featured by SF Girl By Bay, designlovefest, Parachute Home and Architectural Digest's Clever.
