I was walking down Newbury Street in Boston and passed by a second hand store and saw these twisted cordials in the window.I lusted after them and would often go by to see if they had been sold. They were priced at $20. I just could not afford them. So finally after weeks of torturing myself. I went back to my studio and made them. Here they are set on a whitish gold tray on a blue chair which is tufted in black. The floor is red and deep yellow tile. The cordials are painted by painting black gouache over scribbled crayon. I scratched into the blue of the chair with the flat edge of a screw driver. Signed on the front in pencil. 12/2/1986

These large watercolor and gouache works on paper (usually 140lb Arches hot press) are figuratively inspired but painted with a vibrant physically engaged approach. The images are drawn from my life experiences. I use crayon resist, wet and wet, sgraffito ( using the back of my fingernails to scrape away the paint or use the flat side of a screwdriver to uncover a colorful under painting). I get a thrill when I take a chance and push the image but can still limit myself to a restrictive palette. I give the composition a twisted perspective, the picture builds up energy and the slanting images feel like they are slipping off the edge of the paper. You are seeing the image from my POV. I use hot and zestful saturated colors. I look at still life with a fresh perceptiveness, humor and whimsy: a joi de vivre approach where "less is more than meets the eye". I studied at the Massachusetts College of Arts, I have work in the Fogg Art Museum, MIT, The Rose Art Museum, and the Paine-Webber Collection. I also work with industrial grade aluminum foil but I am currently not offering this work at Saatchi. I was the featured artist, sponsored by Interall Srl, Aluminum 2000, Verona Italy this June.
