ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In my piece "Unnamed Haecceity #2" explores, at least in part, the concepts of other-than-human, nature, and the perception of what is considered natural. I draw inspiration from the following quote by Deleuze and Guattari to explore the affective potential of aesthetic experience: "There is a mode of individuation very different from that of a person, subject, thing, or substance. We reserve the name haecceity for it. A season, a winter, a summer, an hour, a date have a perfect individuality lacking nothing, even though this individuality is different from that of a thing or a subject. They are haecceities in the sense that they consist entirely of relations of movement and rest between molecules or particles, capacities to affect and be affected" (Deleuze & Guattari, 1980/1987, 261). [The affective experience I am referring to draws from the research of Emery Schubert, E., Adrian C. North, and David J. Hargreaves. In their paper " Aesthetic Experience Explained by the Affect-Space" they develop a framework for organizing the semantic structure of aesthetic experience which they call 'affect-space.']

Life is nourished and shaped by personal symbolism, individual and collective stories of experience, belief, ritual, mythology, social fears, and desires. Drawing from this eclectic set of references, I create relational, poetic, and critically thought-out forms combining high and low art, using criticality and humour to explore parallel times and spaces. My work focuses on creating space for speculative and fictitious queer bodies, survivance, and a sense of place while raising questions of belonging, conflict, and anxiety. I combine overlooked, undervalued, and discarded objects with images and materials in an attempt to emphasize the "re-seeing" of certain histories that have been forgotten or ignored. My oeuvre is a hybrid visual language that oscillates between gestural expression and strategy of chance. My process reflects an accumulation of life's associations, intuiting facets of intimacy, control, and the freedom of letting go of total control.
