Giuseppe Verga was born in 1973 in Mola di Bari. He graduated at the School of Fine Arts in Urbino. At the moment he lives and works in Milan - Italy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- In my opinion, in contemporary society most of communication is based on images. We are constantly besieged by images coming from monitors, posters, televisions, the Internet, etc. This huge number of images does not get lost when the eyes stop watching but piles up in layers and places itself in the infinite archive of human memory. I like to think about it as an uncontrolled continuous upload and compression of images by the mind, a process which removes all the redundant data to create synthetic images and save space. Any photo I find attractive is temporarily put aside waiting to be retrieved afterwards, like a file in a computer. In this archive of the memory, family snapshots, child memories, often full of religious references, and the atmosphere of my childhood and adolescent environments meet haphazardly. All things pass through the realm of image as a language experience. The new generation and I cannot but face this kind of experience. It is exactly through it, its implicit associations of images and mental references, that I weave the threads of my private history with melancholic lightness, trying never to fall into narration, anecdote or moral. At this stage, painting becomes a means to make my personal experience of the world recognizable, to consider my life and that of the places where I was born and brought up as a collective life essentially. The pictorial result is a synthetic, syncopated human micro-universe that can be perceived slowly, as if one looked without glasses; the painted figures seem blurred, expanded and contracted visions. The «corporeal» compactness dematerialises in hazy, muted shades of colour, which in my latest works tend to distil into the sober contrast between the white paint and the white canvas with no prime on it: light is entrusted with the task of compressing the images that memory has to store.
