ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The story of this painting goes like this: when I went back to Taiwan for Chinese new year, I finally had some time to visit my favourite city, Tainan. That trip reminded me how much I love the old Taiwan. I asked myself: if I one day go back to live in Taiwan, what would that house look like? I don't think I would want a European-style house. I think I would like a house like this, from the 1970s in Taiwan. It looks a bit ugly, I admit! But there are so many beautiful details here: the blue wooden door, the metal decorations on the window frames. And there's a bird house on the roof. Even if you don't have birds, you can use it in the summer to sleep up there and escape the heat! The landscape is based on the area around Taoyuan, where I grew up. This is the time of year when you sow the rice, so the rice fields are mostly green with small rice plants, with the sun reflecting in the water. Perhaps you also noticed the little vegetable garden by the house? I had a great time painting this, because I was playing Taiwanese music from the 1960s and 1970s the whole time. My friend Summer calls this grandma music. I just can't stop thinking about how beautiful Taiwan is. Sometimes Taiwanese people say that we have no culture, but as I listened to the music and painted this landscape, I felt strongly that we have something very unique. Of course it's a bit tragic for me, if it's so great, why am I not there? Like those birds in the sky heading to a place unknown, I'm a little bit the same. I hope that one day I can return.

My art wants to put a smile on your face. All of my paintings tell a story, and every story has a little twist. You'll have to look closely: details matter to me. I was born and grew up in Taiwan, and moved to the Netherlands in 2014, where I am again living now after a 2-year stint in San Diego.
