About The Artwork

In the 16th and 17th Centuries, still life paintings referred to as "Vanitas" became popular. Full of symbols that reminded the viewer of the fleeting nature of life and material possessions, they often included a skull to symbolize mortality. I was inspired to paint a contemporary Vanitas when a friend offered to lend me a medical teaching skull. Unlike the traditional Vanitas paintings, this one is full of cheap, throw-away items and inexpensive jewellery. It is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek interpretation of the original genre and meant to be taken lightly. The colours in this painting are deep earth tones, consistent with the palette of traditional Dutch still life work, offset by the bright pearly blues of the plastic containers and the pink and red of the blush and lipstick. The painting continues around the sides of the canvas, so it may be hung as-is by the attachment on the back, or it may be framed.
