In the image captured by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, the Vela Pulsar appears to be a burning ember of yellow and red, reverberating waves of colour and jets of gas, expelled by a massive star that collapsed within the Vela supernova, 800 light years away. In addition to burning bright, the Vela Pulsar is incredibly dense—like that of an atomic nucleus. It’s also quite massive—greater than the Sun—and it spins ten times per second. The death of a star is not something that happens right away. It leaves traces or “remnants” in the universe, which is the theme of this series. No matter how many deaths we die, how many lives we live, how many layers and lifetimes we shed along the way, there is still a trace of our original, primeval energy out there in the universe, particles and atoms of ourselves, rollicking around around in the interstellar dust. Who knows whether they will sucked in or spewed out by a supernova’s centrifugal or centripetal force?

Cambodia
Régis Pineault is an emerging visual artist from Montreal, Canada, recently relocated to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Born and raised in Gaspésie, options were limited, so he made the move to Montreal at the age of 20, a city with a lively arts and music scene. His early creative exploits centred mainly around music and writing, before moving on to visual art. In search of spontaneous creative freedom, jazz improvisation held much appeal for him, but he felt compelled to to express his creative energy in other ways besides music and writing. Once he began to explore painting, he discovered his innate talent for colour in abstract painting. His work could be described as action or intuitive painting. It was not a decision to paint this way—it was a necessity. He strives to expose the unconscious, letting himself be guided solely by intuition, thus allowing everything buried deep inside burst forth in an explosion of colour on the canvas. The result is a series of works that reveal a range of emotions—from turmoil and chaos to jubilance and joy. His diverse body of work can be grouped into various themes that express his current moods and reactions to the struggles in his daily life and the world around him. All pictures of the art are taken with natural light only. No retouching, no filters.
