About The Artwork
This canvas stayed around my studio for several years and went through several variations, building up thick layers of impasto abstraction along the way. Finally, I decided that the texture and ochre color reminded me of Venice, so I applied an image transfer on top of the painting from a photograph of a carnival mask from one of my trips to Venice. I view image transfers using the process that I use as both a means of combining painting with photography and as just another way of apply a pigment-based medium to the canvas. I then continued with several more rounds of painting on top of the mask before arriving at the final result.
