ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Based on the Venus of Lespugue an Upper Paleolithic steatopygous figurine carved from tusk ivory. Discovered in the foothills of the Pyrenes it dates to 26,000 years ago. As the first known representations of the human form, the Venus series of female figurines invites us to reimagine their prehistoric meaning. Their interpretation as apotropaic figures, emblems of success and security, goddesses and supreme creators to be revered or worshipped speaks to their significance.
