The solo exhibition "The Breathing Island" by Venezuelan artist Ismael Rodríguez Fernández explores the semiotic mechanisms of living beings, presenting a world of dialogues and representations that surpass human logic. The artist combines memories from Mérida, Venezuela, with his new experiences in Oxford, England, emphasizing migratory adaptation. Through diverse artistic processes such as collage, painting, drawing, and sculpture, Rodríguez accentuates his experimentation, incorporating elements from his current landscape. The exhibition portrays the artist's immersion in the details of nature, from traditional visual constructions to the "minor" aspects often overlooked by an anthropocentric gaze. The artist draws parallels between the arthropod organisms in both cities, creating an imagined ecosystem that merges Venezuelan and English landscapes. The exhibition invites viewers to contemplate a self-made territory where images transform into signs, prompting reflection on a living condition beyond the human. Rodríguez's living island becomes a representation of an impending absence, suggesting a future where thoughts matter, and all beings coexist harmoniously.

Explorer, playing to understand what surrounds me, with a very strong interest in nature. I have also taken advantage of science and technology nourishing myself from phenomena observable by the human eye to subatomic particles I cannot see but I know they exist. I was born in Caracas Venezuela in 1990 to a dad who’s family migrated to Venezuela from Tenerife and to a mom with indigenous heritage from the Guajira ethnic group. I studied in Mérida and obtained my degree in Visual Arts at the University of Los Andes. Ever since then I have carried out more than a line of investigation, but rather a line of experimentation from the transgression and corporeality of the matter to the manipulation of digital images. Starting from the figurative world, this led me to expressions in abstract terms of emotions that can be transferred from digital languages to the force of primitive painting and vice versa. In recent years, I have also investigated nature as old as the cosmos, from the tiniest cell to bugs like us, we are all part of it. I am a kind of walker and my laboratory is my environment. From the Venezuelan Andes, to the central mountain range in Medellin, and crossing the Atlantic, looking for other skies with seeds in my pockets. I find myself at this moment in an exercise of connection with the earth and what surrounds us, the infinite beauty of being alive, ideal places where you can breathe the metaphors, mountains, sea, savannas, rivers, perception of the natural world. I look behind my work for new ways to relate them to nature, some ephemeral, others lasting like stones, I hope my work says something about nature
