About The Artwork

Florida's limestone was formed by sediment left by the Everglades. While flowing southwest, water percolated through shells, decaying wildlife and plants. The flow has been slowed by our roads, farms and development. Florida’s spine is the Everglades, the river of grass. What unusual new sediment will we leave behind? Vestige started with an observational drawing of my medical spine model. A loose ground of watercolor abstraction reminiscent of limestone is the ground for skeletal images. I find skeletons of reptiles around my home. Anhinga birds dry their wings in my lake and fish for food. They are part of my environment. Vestige is part of my Visual Archaeology series. An archaeologist uncovers unrelated clues that define a species or culture. We are surrounded by details that become our memories. Our lives are really very fragile. At any moment, fate could take away familiarity. Life and death are a cycle.

Artists Statement...I create puzzles. A jigsaw player knows never to force a piece that doesn’t quite fit. Sometimes you have to examine a piece another way to register the connection. Each piece looks completely different taken out of context.... My drawings and paintings compare unrelated elements. These comparisons challenge the way we perceive our surroundings and each other. The FAÇeADE project attempts to form connections between people based on common human experience. Each portrait and story fit together to illustrate our unique community.... Painting and drawing from life are my discipline and passion. I teach students to see and develop their personal voice. My degree in illustration taught me to tell a story. Studying with painting masters taught me to create illusions.... BIO...Elizabeth Reed never thought she would live in Florida. After sailing from Chicago to the Keys in 1979, she only imagined living in South Florida on a sailboat. Her eyes opened wide when she returned. Her suburban home sits on limestone surrounded by wildlife (the animal type.) The natural surroundings fascinated her, but accepting the diverse community took more time.... Elizabeth draws and paints about the interaction between nature and humans. She considers the elements in her work as unique pieces of a puzzle. She introduces a fresh perspective by rearranging the pieces of nature and community.
