This piece is inspired by the Hokulea, a craft based on the design of the original voyaging canoe the Hawaiians used to navigate the ocean. The Hokulea recently completed a worldwide peace tour, and inspirited many young people with pride that their ancestors were able to cross the Pacific Ocean on such a craft. I wanted the feel of wild and sky and navigating by the stars, so I included gold leaf and star maps as well as bamboo stamps called ohe kapala which were used to decorate kappa fabrics in olden days. This painting was created on birch board and has a gloss finish. Framing is included.
