Water Blanket Bog Painting

Please Note: This painting is currently on loan until December 2021 through London's foremost Art Consultancy. 'Water' remains for sale but can not be dispatched until the loan ends in December. 'Water' forms part of a collection of 5 x paintings on the theme of the 5 x Elements - Earth, Fire, Air, Spirit and Water. The 5th Element of Spirit is also glimpsed in all 5 paintings in an elusive oval shape. Four of the paintings are available to purchase - 'Earth' is now sold. 'Spirit' is available to view from my studio only. 'Water' was inspired by a trip to Snowdonia's Blanket Bog; an area that is like a sponge and constantly drenched in water. I always find a visual source material that I have seen, experienced, witnessed and made visual notes from. I then have a reference point that is 'real', from which to abstract my work. It is very important to my process that my work is anchored in observation and the Natural World. This artwork also relates to my interest in Encaustic painting - an ancient technique that uses layers of heated beeswax, to which pigments and mixed media are added and which I have used extensively. 'Water' forms part of the 'Elements' collection of paintings that are constructed using Oil, Acrylic and Digital Media. However, the method of working takes inspiration from the qualities inherent in the Encaustic process. Here, I also aim for a translucent, shimmering quality so that within the finished image the viewer can see or partially see what has gone on before. The multi layers act like windows upon windows. By this process, the artwork transmutes into a mysterious, unknown new entity that is much more than the sum of its parts. Akin to Alchemy, it is a seemingly magical process of transformation. The subject is at once recognisable and yet not quite recognisable; occupying the space of metaphor and yet drawing inspiration from the natural world. In this collection, I am interested in all that is fleeting. Whether the subjects are water in the natural environment , footsteps in the sand, the visibility of the cosmos or flickering flames; perhaps it is in these elusive spectacles and events that Eternity can be glimpsed. The painting is hard to photograph and somewhat elusive in this respect. It has a slight sparkle related to an iridescent black oil paint that I used. It therefore slightly shimmers and catches the light. It is also much more layered and complex than perhaps comes across on the photo; in particular, there are glimpses of the blanket bog just beneath the surface.
