My INSPIRATION for this piece was my model, my love for nature as well as my love for the history and future of mankind. The model's entire body is tattooed with natural shapes, vines and flowers. His nose is an insect. Parts of his anatomy have been replaced with bulbs and roots. He is immersed and rooted in nature by virtue of the tattoos. He has shed his clothes to be even closer to nature. We can see on the blazer from a past life that his lapel pin is a gold metal spider. Through drips and blobs of paint and the more intentional drawn vignettes throughout we can see various figures from past centuries such as, an 18th Century village, a Victorian couple in a horse drawn carriage, an ancient Chinese fisherman and so on.They represent the past-water under the bridge-if you will, The painting as a whole, however, represents a future utopia where mankind has truly melded with nature. I hope that VIEWERS WILL FEEL the same exhilaration that I felt for nature, mankind and our history and future while painting and also uplifted by the wonderful possibilities for the future if we live in harmony with nature. TECHNICAL MATTERS: I chose the meandering, dense style of drawing and painting to mimic the indirect course of natural evolution. I let myself be guided by the shapes created by brushstrokes or drips in some cases and other times my drawing skill. I used acrylic paint with a retarder to slow down the drying time so it would drip and spill more readily to suggest the variuous drawings and so I could paint wet on wet. The painting is framed in a white gallery floating frame and is ready for hanging.

As a painter, I am an explorer, uncovering, recording and rearranging the beauty of the natural world, as well as the beauty of human beings. I select and distill the very essence of my subject, harmony between nature and humanity, sometimes combining the two. This symbiosis makes the finished work even more beautiful than either of its constituents alone. When you first visit my fantasy world, you will notice a lot of extraordinary things going on in my paintings. For instance, I might substitute a bird for a hat, or a butterfly for a bowtie. These unusual substitutions function as symbols and provide subtle clues and playful suggestions about my work. The shapes of birds and hats, or butterflies and bowties, are so similar that viewers never even question the replacements. I pick the substitutes because they fit graphically and visually. But it is more than that. We as humans fit with nature. We fit together so well, in fact, that I am able to paint a natural object–a butterfly–in place of the bowtie–and viewers can see this as truth. My world will refresh you with its vibrant colors, textures, and interchangeable shapes as you immerse yourself in the integration of nature and humanity. You will be at peace with yourself and at one with nature. You will experience nature in a totally new way and see beauty in places where you never before thought to look.
