Wavy Overpass Painting

I view these paintings as nostalgic artifacts from the golden age of carbon-based fuels that evoke bittersweet feelings of loss and regret. I see the subject matter now as illusory “free” ways where we painted our dreams with enormous concrete brush strokes, all the while making unintended changes to the world’s climate and the future of humanity. They were once celebrated as facilitators of commerce, communication – and even love – but now are often seen as chaotic tangles out of which we must somehow find our way. For me, they retain a dark, conflicted beauty. They are reminders that we humans have successfully used technology and engineering to solve our problems in the past. I can’t help but wonder if that strategy will work for us again. With this series I’ve been trying to illuminate some of these questions and contradictions.
