About The Artwork
"Way of life" is unusual in being on rough Arches paper, rather than smooth. The underlayer dates back to 2017-18, when I was making "egg" paintings out of pools of watercolor. In November 2019, after I had been putting leaning bars in paintings, this one seemed to offer an opportunity. I started with some bars 2-3 inches apart, and kept adding bars in between, though I hadn't expected to. The bars became a continuous rough surface -- not so much bars anymore -- as if it were all intentional, or a "way of life." The flash of pink is what makes the painting, and I had to work hard editing the photo to make that pink look like the actual painting.
