About The Artwork

This painting is based on the handwritten letters of JMW Turner and is part of series of works each with its own story. The letter I used comes from the archives of The British Library, who kindly waived copyright restrictions allowing me to use it in this work. The painting is built up in layers of acrylic paint and silk screen print on a good quality stretched canvas. In the background are 18th C maps of central London and the roads leading out of London. On top are layers of the four page letter Turner wrote to James Holworthy, from London describing his painting trip to the Alps in 1826. My intention was to make it look as if Turner, himself, had written in the painting. The title is a line taken from the letter, Turner often used very long titles. The description he makes of travelling in quite treacherous conditions by foot and horse and carriage is remarkable. The painting is set in a white frame echoing the colour of the handwriting and also making reference to the snowy conditions Turner talks about. The letter is written on quite fine semi transparent paper folded up with Holsworthy's address near Sheffield, together with the postage date and black wax seal. Turner apologies for rambling so long which is quite typical of many of his letters. This one is no exception, with very little punctuation and certainly no paragraphs. It is easy to imagine how Turner spoke by reading it aloud, he hardly draws breath. A typewritten copy of the letter in the painting is included on the back of the painting.

I trained as a sculptor and printmaker at Hornsey College of Art but have lived in the Tamar Valley in Cornwall for the past 12 years, running Callington School of Art. I work primarily with text, this year using Turner’s correspondence I’ve acquired from the archives of the British Library, the RA, the Tate and the Sir John Soane’s museum. I silk screen printed both local and 18th century maps of where Turner lived in London with the letters into the paintings, in layers. The colours I use come from the faded letters or from Turner’s works themselves. The letters when read aloud give us a real idea of how Turner spoke and my intention was to have the writing in the painting as if Turner himself had written it there. Each painting tells its own story which you can read about with each painting entry. I document all my works in A4 concertina sketchbooks.
