This painting explores the nature of 'belief'. However, whether religious belief or belief in ones-self, it is never fully established. Instead, the figure stares out in deep thought as he considers an unknown notion in a moment of solitude. From his furrowed brow, we can tell he is anxious. The uncompromising use of red and black, with the warmth of yellow smothered in the background, create an overwhelming intensity. The smoke from his cigarette appears to turn into bats to emphasise the brooding atmosphere. Has he really been having a discussion with God? Viewers can consider this and arrive at their own conclusions.
