About The Artwork

This artwork explores the depths of being ‘coloured’ in South Africa and is 2 of 3 pieces in the series “What colour am I?” ‘Coloured (not derogatory in South Africa) - a word used that was taken back and owned by an ethnic group in South Africa with heavily mixed heritage after the term was used as a tool for discrimination and to cause divide for POC during Apartheid (SA).’ “What colour am I?” Focuses on navigating life as a coloured woman. Navigating society’s desire and inability to distinguish what my ethnicity and race is and ultimately what colour I am. The word ‘coloured’ in and of itself is a very contentious topic - with many people believing that it is detrimental to refer to oneself as coloured and most coloured people believing that they have taken the word and description and made it their own term. With such diverse ancestry and backgrounds Coloured people are of the most culturally rich communities in the world and to further emphasise that I used colours that are vibrant and put a part of my identity on a canvas.

I am a South African artist who took up Visual arts in high school and then went from pursuing engineering to being a full time entrepreneur and self-taught artist. My creativity and ideas stem from emotion and I use art as an outlet. In my work I expose 'me'. I use art as a platform to spark conversations about mental health, cultural and social issues. I make use of a lot of personal elements of my identity to create art. I create expressively and appreciate not needing to conform to the norms. I prefer doing works with acrylic paint but have grown quite fond of mixed media.
