Bigby Wolf is a fictional character in the American comic book series Fables published by DC Comics and its alternative imprint Vertigo. The character first appeared in Fables #1 (July 2002) and was created by Bill Willingham and Lan Medina . He frequently serves as the lead character among the ensemble cast of Fables and is the central protagonist of Fables: Werewolves Of The Heartland as well as Fables: The Wolf Among Us, the comic book adaptation of the 2013 video game The Wolf Among Us. Within the series, Bigby Wolf is a member of the "Fable" community – fantastical characters from fairy tales and folklore who formed a clandestine society centuries ago within New York City known as Fabletown, after their Homelands have been conquered by a mysterious and deadly enemy known as "The Adversary". Bigby is the embodiment of the Big Bad Wolf, a villainous wolf characterappearing in several cautionary tales that include Grimms' Fairy Tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Peter and the Wolf, and The Three Little Pigs, as well as some of Aesop's Fables. Effectively immortal like most other Fables, Bigby is capable of shapeshifting between human form, a therianthropic hybrid wolf-like creature form, and a giant wolf form. After gaining the ability to shapeshift and pardoned for his past deeds, Bigby assumed the role of Fabletown's sheriff, and in the following centuries he has mostly remained in his human form and tries to put his dark past as a menacing predator behind him. Bigby Wolf has received a positive reception for his complex characterization as an anti-heroic figure, and is considered to be the closest character the Fable series has to a protagonist

 The Woodsman, nicknamed Woody, is a character in the Fables: The Wolf Among Us comics. He is known for fighting and winning against the Big Bad Wolf back in the Homelands whilst saving Red Riding Hood. Though unbeknownst to most, the Woodsman had in truth intended to rob Red Riding Hood's grandmother, and the fight against the Big Bad Wolf was incidental. His heroic reputation diminishes since arriving in Fabletown, where Bigby Wolf is the sheriff.
 
 Background: In the Homelands, the Woodsman steals a magic axe that allows him to rob houses more efficiently. One day, while planning to break into the house of Red Riding Hood's grandmother, the Woodsman finds that the house is already under attack from the Big Bad Wolf. Using his axe, the Woodsman cuts the wolf open, fills him with rocks and throws him in the river. After facing the Big Bad Wolf and saving Red Riding Hood, the Woodsman is regarded as a hero. In the Exodus, the Woodsman is among the many Fables forced to flee the Homelands and travel to the mundane world. However, in Fabletown, his popularity diminishes as Bigby becomes the town's sheriff, and eventually the Woodsman becomes an unstable drunk.

The series features various characters from fairy tales and folklore – referring to themselves as "Fables" – who formed a clandestine community centuries ago within New York City known as Fabletown, after their Homelands were conquered by a mysterious and deadly enemy known as "The Adversary". It is set in the modern day and follows several of Fabletown's legal representatives, such as sheriff Bigby Wolf, deputy mayor Snow White, her sister Rose Red, Prince Charming, and Boy Blue, as they deal with troublesome Fables and try to solve conflicts in both Fabletown and "the Farm", a hidden town in upstate New York for Fables unable to blend in with human society. The series also deals with such other matters as the main characters' personal lives, their attempts to hide the Fables' true nature from regular humans (or "Mundies"), and, later, the return of the Adversary. Fables was a critical and commercial success, winning many Eisner Awards and receiving several Hugo Award nominations for Best Graphic Story. Its success led to several spin-offs and a 2013 prequel video game titled The Wolf Among Us.
