About The Artwork

An expressive work painted in the studio and en plein air by my countryside studio in North Auckland. Directly in front of the studio there's hills and paddocks filled with sheep. Lambing season is a special time of the year as the land comes alive with echoes of lambs and a return to sun-filled days. This work celebrates the freedom of being outside and savoring time in nature.

Deborah Moss works from her country studios beside a native forest in North Auckland which provides endless inspiration for her creative practice. Working mostly with paint, she begins each piece with expressive marks which mirror her dynamic surroundings. Layers and colours in this stage are applied playfully - inviting a more considered response as the dialogue between gestures and storytelling evolves. Experimenting with texture and a variety of non-conventional tools adds depth and interest in her paintings. She strives to create contrasts between considered and gestural marks; light and dark, space and active areas but above all - a passionate response to her muse in her chosen medium. The artist has exhibited throughout New Zealand and her works are held in private collections in New Zealand and the United States, Singapore, England and Australia. She has been a regular finalist in national art awards and is the 2022 Supreme Winner Craig's Investment Partners Art Prize (Wanaka). Every time Deborah sells an original artwork, a native tree is planted on her property as part of her “Planting hope” initiative to help the environment.
