The Syntax Series is an ongoing body of work exploring the structure and language that lies beneath the city surface. To date, the mediums used are found plywood and torn down billposters. These mediums allow the creative process to be subtractive and minimalist, by the application and removal of layers – A type of anti-painting that pares back the surface to reveal hidden layers, bearing testament to the passage of time.

I'm an Edinburgh based, abstract artist working with materials commonly found in the urban environment. Torn down billposters, found wood and concrete are typical of the mediums I use to emphasise physicality and the passage of time. By using processes such as abrasion, cutting and décollage I reconfigure the material to create work that unites mass, surface and pattern. My work occupies a space between painting and sculpture under the context of a central theme: 'Our shifting attitudes towards time and place in the digital age.' I began as a graffiti artist in the mid 1980’s before switching to studio-based work in 2005. Although having dismissed graffiti aesthetics the experience of working directly in the urban environment has shaped my understanding of how we interact with our surroundings.
