About The Artwork
Inspired by Bizet;s opera Carmen I wanted to create a painting depicting the tragic life of such a character. Carmen works in a cigarette factory, a low paying job. She is a gypsy. First performed in Paris in 1875, the opera tells her story and her search for love and dignity and I wished in this painting to depict the complex desires and hopes of such a woman. The human face, the figure itself are my main interest in painting.
