About The Artwork

“Sharks are a critical keystone species. They maintain the balance of life in the sea and keep our coral reefs healthy. But global fisheries kill millions of sharks each year, and sharks are now in peril throughout the world.” -Marineconservation.org.au Shark finning is the cruel practice of removing fins from a shark and then throwing it back into the sea, often while still alive. It has had a big effect on the reduction of shark numbers and species becoming threatened for extinction. There is a very negative stigma around sharks, this stigma is directly effecting the death of our coral reefs and the balance of the ocean. Because sharks are considered scary, people find it easy to turn a blind eye when it comes to their death. Though Shark finning is banned in many places, it’s still happening and could lead to major consequences if it continues at this rate. In my practice I’m learning more and more about these species and the danger that sharks are in every day and it lead me to create these 2 artworks. If they create awareness even for one person then they were worth every hour spent on them

Prudence Coburn is an Australian Artist from Victoria, living on the Sunshine Coast. Her inspiration stems from her surrounding landscape and environment, particularly her deep connection with the ocean. This connection grew from living along the Australian coastline, witnessing our remarkable wildlife in nature and developing a passion for longboard surfing. Her interest in the ocean heavily influences her art practice as she explores feelings of calm, solitude, depth, collaboration, vastness, warmth, strength and vulnerability throughout her art practice. Behind each of her artworks lies the intention to expose the complexity and the beauty within nature in a simple way, encouraging more people to view natural elements this way in the future.
