About The Artwork

Inspired by the unique nature of Yellowstone National Park. This is a kind of abstraction because of the tight crop. It's basically the ground and the hot water flowing from a geothermal site somewhere in Yellowstone. Actually I'm pretty sure it's near the Grand Prismatic Spring which most people will recognize when they see a picture of it. It's just such a unique place in nature that I was inspired to photograph it and then to paint it. The ground around us seldom looks like this. I also liked the design of the lines, colors, and textures I saw. I see an owl when I look at this painting now... do you? I am constantly inspired by nature both grand and modest in it's presentation. I feel that when out in the natural world / non human landscapes that beauty and wonder is all around us and that we as artists just need to pay attention to be constantly amazed by this world. I call my style Photographic Impressionism for lack of a better term. I am a life long professional photographer and many of my paintings are from photographs I've made and I believe that the experience of being a photographer and making pictures in my head and seeing light, line, texture, and color as a photographer greatly influences my painting. Thanks for reading and looking at my art. I am happy to answer any questions I can. Cheers!

I'm a Photographer and Painter born in Pueblo, Colorado, USA (1966). My father was a landscape architect and my mother, a teacher and librarian. Both of them practiced creative arts and crafts outside of their professions. Mom has painted for as long as I can remember and Dad always has some new or continuing creative interest he's working on (drawing, painting, stained glass, wood working...). I have one older brother and one younger. While growing up in the 70's and 80's we lived in a couple small towns in South Central and Southwest Colorado, Del Norte and Cortez. There was one short stint in Vermont when I was 2 or 3 and another in Northern California when I was 9 years old but both times we came back fairly quickly to Colorado. I started my obsession with photography in high school. I was very inspired by Ansel Adams at that time. After studying photography and graphic arts at college in Flagstaff, Arizona I moved to Seattle, Washington where I've lived for 32 years, mostly working in commercial and editorial photography. I am an artist and always have been. There are many other artists who have influenced me over my career. Ansel Adams, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Gregory Heisler, Patrick Demarchelier, Albert Watson, Elliot Erwitt, Georgia O'Keefe, Andrew Wyeth, Ed Mell, and many more. In painting I am mostly self taught except for a handful of classes and workshops I've taken over the years and whatever I absorbed from my mother and grandmother in all the time I watched their painting. My photography was learned through years of formal training in high school and college and tutelage while working with over 100 different photographers when I was a freelance photographers assistant... that and a lot of practice and perseverance over 35+ years. My art photography is mostly nature inspired though I often think I should try creating more figurative work from time to time. Maybe I'll change it up one day... you never know.
