Your Eyes are Like Lakes on Another Planet Painting

I often begin works with an automatic drawing exercise to create a trigger image, which for this painting was the blank eyes of Roman sculptures that are revealed after their original coat of paint wears off over centuries. This evolved into an image of a bust of Caligula recontextualized into a landscape rendered desolate by climate extremes. Caligula is known in popular culture as an icon of irrationality and blind power, and here he becomes a kind of atavistic figure busy activating the births of alligators. Alligators are the earth's most ancient animals on a molecular level, and their survival or rebirth during an ice age may suggest either hope, or an iteration of earth after human dominance.
