About The Artwork
On the 13th October 1914 the French and British armies took up defensive positions at the town of Ypres. The allies aim was to stop the German army's push towards the ports of Calais and Dunkirk. The first battle of Ypres continued through the autumn and finally reached a stalemate in January 1915. The resulting bulge into the German lines was called the Ypres Salient and would be the scene of several more major battles throughout the war.
