Zazzi was based on a building that stood on the corner of Culvert Road and Seven Sisters Road, London N15. It caught my eye one day as I was driving past. Why it interested me, I've no idea. I stopped the car to look closer. Later I went back to draw and take reference photographs. Basil Rowe, a commercial advertising artist, laid out the lettering for me to paint. My lettering is poor. I cared about such things then. Now I work looser and would tick it in myself. I worked on 'Zazzi' for over a year. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Years later a man living in Italy emailed to say it was where he was born and bred. He'd come across it while researching his genealogy. Square section oak frame. NB: Though described on this site as 'acrylic on wood', this work is actually painted in acylic on a gessoed panel. The panel is made of hardboard, known in the US as Masonite.

United Kingdom
I paint industrial architecture, townscapes, landscapes, portraits and still life. Many pictures are based on London buildings, some of which - most of which come to think of it - have since been demolished, though not as a direct result of depiction. My interest in industrial architecture stems from the fact that I used to paint outdoors, in front of the scene itself. One of the few places you could do this without being disturbed was on derelict industrial wasteland - brown field sites as they're now called. If you paint in public places passers-by constantly interrupt. They look over your shoulder at what you're doing and say things like: 'My Nigel draws....'
