Colorful bird of paradise in a colorful setting. I always process my personal experiences in my expressionistic, colorful paintings. Oil paint is my best medium to achieve a three-dimensional effect through varying thicknesses in the painting (on high quality paper, structured, 290 g/qm).

Matthias Schuster also infuses his work with an enormous amount of imagination and creativity, so that his expressionist paintings always tell stories as well. A self-taught artist, Schuster completed an apprenticeship as a painter and varnisher in the early 1980s; he was just as fascinated by mixing colors and creating shades as he was by sketching and painting, which he had been doing since the age of 14. Matthias Schuster took several courses with the Hofheim-based painter Herrmann Haindl. His paintings often feature animals that, thanks to the expressionist color palette and textures, appear to be mythical creatures. Very often these are birds, such as the imaginary bird that almost completely fills the large canvas, its plumage consisting of patches of color. But fish, owls, dogs, and even a snake also appear in his works, along with flowers and blossoms. Matthias Schuster likes to incorporate nature into his art, touching on spiritual aspects as well—often through structural, symbolic elements. Occasionally, geometric compositions appear; at other times, the painter gives free rein to spontaneous imagination in the development of his motifs—or so it seems to the viewer, at least. All of this brings his paintings to life, making them joyful and peaceful in themselves. There is no chaos; everything has a purpose.
Viewers can choose for themselves the stories these paintings tell. Matthias Schuster paints with passion, much like a storyteller recounting a fairy tale; he paints his visions, his thoughts, and his world in such a way that the viewer is nourished by the power of color and imagination. A joyful and colorful world of fantasy awaits you."

“I’m always driven by the idea—and this is my primary concern—of integrating different things and objects. I process my experiences—whether good or bad, sad or funny, past or present—into my paintings. My work is dominated by bold colors and color contrasts, as well as strong forms whose movement you can often literally feel, even though they are merely ‘oil on canvas or cardboard.’” (Matthias Schuster)
