Since I majored in Oriental painting and design, I spent days agonizing over how to interpret traditional beauty in a modern way. In the meantime, I found that pop art, which is a genre communicating with the public actively in contemporary art, is similar to Korea folk painting, which was popular among the common people in the past. So I created a new genre called folk pop painting. I draw Jeju folk pop painting. This works started with an amusing idea: what if our long gone ancestors would have painted today’s Jeju island, Korea. I have portrayed the island’s beauty in very Korean and sensitive folk paintings. I didn’t stop at imitating ancient examples but reinterpreted my subjects through my own vision. However, the coloring technique I chose for my works is very ancestral, using old-fashioned coloring utensils to paint several layers on classic Korean paper. Haenyeo divers and harubang stone figures appear in front of Jeju’s beautiful nature backgrounds, animals in a playful scene. More so than depicting sights realistically, I paid most attention to my feelings and expressed my very own images of jeju.
