This is a painting that is pulling a few loose strands together for me… 1. Abstraction - it’s a more abstracted view of negative space (light through branches) so things are becoming even less recognisable which is where I think I am heading. 2. Distortion of source/subject - I have played with the source photo and mirrored it so there is a really interesting Rorschach effect with the white painted negative space shapes happening. But because I’ve drawn/traced/painted by hand the mirror image is not reliable. There are a lot of areas of discrepancy. 3. My What3words series of work - it’s from an image that I can geolocate using the what3words map app, I am working on a series of paintings inspired by photos I have taken that I can then be very specific about the locations using What3words, they are generally very banal or overlooked places. I love the idea that I am pinpointing a place (geographically with What3words and in time with the date stamp of the photo) where I have stood and where theoretically a viewer could then also go and stand, but their experience of that place will be very different according to weather, season, context etc and of course my ‘version’ of that place is then another step further in that I have abstracted it. A kind of traceable yet unrepeatable chain connecting disparate things together. The what3words location for this painting is recoup.with.grief, which given where I was, who I was with and things that have happened since now has a very nuanced resonance for me.

Rebecca Tucker, b. 1973, is a Lancashire born/London based painter, with a BA in Fine Art from Reading University 1996 and is an alumni of the Turps Banana Art School on their Off Site Programme (2022-23). Her paintings are the result of a visual ‘discussion’ between abstract and more representational methods of depicting subjects. Rebecca is keen to play with the viewers perception of subject and space in her paintings and then pull that preconceived idea back to the appreciation of what are essentially abstract marks on a two dimensional surface. Recent notable successes include being selected for the Royal West of England Academy Open 2023, selection for the Society of Women Artists Open at the Mall Galleries 2023, selection for the Royal Watercolour Society Open 2024 and 2023 at Bankside Gallery, selection for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2022, being selected for the 2022 and 2021 ING Discerning Eye exhibitions at the Mall Galleries, being shortlisted for the Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize 2022 and being longlisted in the 2021 Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize.
