About The Artwork

This piece started life as a commission but I believe that they wanted a watercolor. Anyway, I bought a 10 pack of 8"x10" canvases, lined them all up on the studio floor and just poured, sprayed, smeared and brushed on the first layer in a green/yellow/blue sort of palette to represent a grasslike background (It is a 10 part polyptych and I should figure out how to initially represent it as such). I allowed it to dry and then I taped off the general shape of a snake with plastic and masking tape. Then I used a technique similar to the application process for the background but with more brushing and paint pens and a moderately opposite palette with more brights. I kind of speed dried that and repeated the process two or three times (i.e. 2 or 3 more layers of paint within the taped off area). Then I removed the tape and all the plastic and was left with this multi-layered snake-ish form. From there I busted out my brand new black paint pen and started sussing out the location and shape of the scales. I know this is merely a nuts and bolts description but there wasn't much of an initial desire to make snake or reptilian painting but, at this point i really started to get inspired by the layers, shapes and visual textures of the body. By far the highest amount of research and precision went into the eye which is a combination snake and gecko eye. At first the eye was actually located mostly on the second canvas which is too far back then i pulled up some images and it's new location made more sense in a couple ways. I studied some different eyes. Amphibious and reptilian Irises. The one i created is definitely gecko inspired. This piece actually opened up some new directions for me and I’m excited to see where they lead. Thank you very much and Aloha. Bret
