About The Artwork

I have always loved seeing reflections on the bus at night, but one morning I was surprised to notice multicolored light projected through the window onto the ceiling. Arching over the empty seats in mid-morning, this light made patterns that reminded me of stained glass windows. The visual surprise of seeing the ceiling of a bus in a new way impelled me to take photograph. Then I noticed the way the lines of perspective suggested motion. Looking at the photograph up-side-down was like looking down a hole into the front window. The posts in the interior had the architectural quality of metal struts. These metal posts line the aisles and enclose the passenger, creating a caged feeling. The red "stop" buttons contrast with the delicate shades of grey and blue, while repeating the warm colors outside. The solitary girl seems both secluded and lonely. She travels alone, driven by an unseen bus driver. Public transportation can be lonely, even when the vehicle is crowded. Solitude in a crowd can also feel like being alone on a bus. I am adding this picture because, unlike many of my more recent mixed-media works, it can be shipped as an unstretched canvas in a tube.

Art is a passion, which I steadfastly develop in my own way, getting inspiration from fragments of poetry, photographs or stories, rather than from drawings or paintings of other artists. Dr. Dalia Hakker-Orion, curator of my solo exhibition in Tel Aviv wrote: “She doesn’t paint according to instructions or styles, but evolves at her own pace, creating original paintings manifesting passages connecting different realities.” My story stretches from my childhood home in Southern California to the Sea of Galilee in Israel. My dual citizenship has strongly influenced my perspectives. From multiple traditions, art emerges as the visual expression of movement and multi-layered ideas. I am currently working with encaustic paint that I make in my studio. My work incorporates a variety of materials: oil, acrylic, pastel, pencil sketches, and found objects.
