About The Artwork
I painted this to recreate the deep stirring feeling I used to get watching the sun rise over the sandy horizon while I was deployed on operations in the Middle East. The unsettled dust in the air would refract the rays from the rising sun in such a way that everything became a deep golden sepia tone. Acrylics were blended from black at the bottom, through brown, to eventually reach a bold yellow ochre at the top. Layered over this are hundreds of detailed streaks of monochromatic colours, which are then finished off with subtle flecks of metallic bronze, which adds a final touch of glimmering contrast. Altogether the painting appears deceptively simple and minimalist but on further inspection becomes intricate with shifting contrasts and horizontal shifts.
